Education Programs

The Laguna is a unique and defining natural feature of the landscape that helps make Sonoma County a special place to live. Knowing the Laguna over time, understanding its value and creating relationships with the landscape and the flora and fauna it supports fosters individual and community health and well-being. The Laguna Foundation’s education programs are designed to connect you, friends, neighbors, and school children to our home environment.

Back in 1999, a handful of committed volunteers developed curriculum to teach elementary school children about the Laguna. This early curricula evolved into Learning Laguna, a wetlands education program which fulfills California state science and language arts standards for grades 2 through 4. Each year teams of docents visit approximately 50 classrooms and lead discovery field trips to the Laguna for more than 1300 children. The Education Program has since expanded to also offer docent led walks for the public along the Laguna and Community Events hosted at the Laguna Environmental Center.

Volunteers are the heart of education programs

We need lots of docent power to keep Learning Laguna going strong! Each spring we offer docent training to volunteers who wish to learn more about the Laguna then teach children the Learning Laguna program in the classroom and on Laguna field trips. The 60-hour training course is dynamic, fun and engaging and trainees are guarenteed to make new friends and be personally enriched by participating!

If you are interested in supporting the Laguna Learning Program, your support or membership can help us expand the program to serve even more children.

In 2012, with the opening of the Laguna Environmental Center, a new educational volunteer position was created: Laguna Guides. These volunteers work primarily at the Center, leading activities and tours of the site during monthly open house events, assisting with public education classes and sometimes leading walks and providing outreach at community events around the watershed.
